Orland Smith was a Civil War officer who originally served with the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. During the battle of Gettysburg, Smith was in command of one of the brigades stationed on the pivotal heights of Cemetery Hill. Though not heavily engaged, his units were continuously under artillery and picket fire. Following his resignation from the service, Orland Smith was brevetted a brigadier general for gallant and meritorious service. He then returned to his pre-war occupation as a railroad officer.
