Richard Beatty Mellon (1858–1933) was the brother of Andrew W. Mellon. The brothers organized a lumber business, before joining interests with their father, Thomas Mellon, a successful Pittsburgh banker and lawyer, who had helped Henry C. Frick to expand his holdings in the coke industry. When Thomas Mellon retired (1886), his two sons took over the banking firm of Thomas Mellon and Sons.

Richard's daughter Sarah along with her younger brother R.K., were heirs to the Mellon fortune, including Mellon Financial Corporation and major investments in Gulf Oil and Alcoa.
